My Epic first arrived today and I've only played with it for a few hours (don't tell my daughter - haha), but I will completely update this review once I've wii u black friday 2015 had a chance to try it for a few days/weeks. So far - very impressed!!! We had the Platinum and returned it (thankful for Leapfrog's excellent customer service). It was slow and froze constantly (maybe because I always maxed out its memory because the storage space was inadequate). We already had a kindle, but the Leapfrog apps, while more costly than the apps on itunes/amazon app store, really were educational and loved by my barely 5 year old (Note: you can buy a 20 buck gift card on amazon for ten bucks and then search for promo codes for Leapfrog - so you get the apps for a great price -- the discounted gift card plus the promo... right now, Sept 2015, there's a 40 percent off game apps if you use the promo code GAME40 - but you can always find different ones almost every other week on Leapfrog's site!).
This Epic device appears to have the best of all worlds - access to the Leapfrog content but also supposedly the ability to download apps from Amazon's appstore (including apps like Netflix - although this is according to the Leapfrog promotional material and I haven't figured out how to do it yet - although I also haven't tried very hard. I will call Leapfrog support and try my hardest and update this with my results in a few days). Right now (day 1) it's a little bit sluggish between screens, but that could be because I'm still downloading some apps. I also find it a little tricky to scroll through the app center without accidentally adding an item to my cart -- very sensitive screen, almost to a fault. The Epic can also be used as a true tablet if you adjust the parental controls. My daughter actually loved the Leapfrog Platinum -- she loved being able to design her own profile and the stylus. The Epic's profile is so much more exciting to design and has all the strengths of the Platinum black friday laptop deals but since it runs on a modified android system, it seems less buggy already and the apps loaded so much more quickly.
One weird thing is that the same apps take up so much more memory on the Epic than on its predecessors - 4x the amount in most instances! So you'll definitely need a memory card - the one main drawback so far. The device feels much more like a real tablet than the leappads - looks sleeker and is lighter. The green case is nice too, but my 5 year old is desperate to tear it off... There aren't a ton of apps available for the Epic yet, but I'm sure in about a month they will have all the Leapfrog content on there. I downloaded 6 apps about 20 minutes ago though and I had to shut the device off and reboot before they loaded, so I'm a little worried about that. Oh! The charger is different. It's a blackberry type charger (the skinnier longer type rather than the standard leapfrog kind).
How does this compare to an iPad or a Kindle Fire? To me, the iPad is much better if you can afford it (or steal your mom's, like I do...haha) - but my daughter seems to truly prefer the Leapfrog products (possibly due to the novelty and the feeling that it is hers). I have a Kindle Fire and really love that (although it's not as easy to type on as the iPad). My daughter loves it too and she goes directly to the "kid safe" app area - not b/c I tell her to, but b/c she loves it! - and I love that for the $4/month we have unlimited access to changing kids' apps for her age. If we could only have one - the Epic or the kindle - I think I would pick the Epic if it was just for my child and cost was not an issue (but I'm on the fence here), but the Kindle if we were going to share a device or if I wanted to have a ton ton ton of apps for less money (but forfeiting the chance to download Leapfrog content). My favorite part of the Epic? I love the home screen. So does my daughter. If you use the promo codes and buy the half off app gift cards...and wait a few months for more content to be available... I think this is a safe bet (assuming we really can access the Amazon appstore on it), but that your child will be just as happy with a Kindle (and your credit card might be happier). :). Update: we just went on an 8 hour drive and my daughter played with it the whole time...giggling and so happy. She loves it so much and really enjoys the home screen which she can design herself. I had mentioned that there was some sluggishness between screens above, but that seems to have cleared up now that the apps are installed. Totally happy with this and highly recommend.

- I have seen previous generation of Leapfrog tablets at retail stores but I could not justify buying one for my (7 and 4 yo) kids. I always found the previous generation Leapfrog tablets to be overpriced because they were a locked ecosystem with very limited (and overpriced) apps/games.
Enter Epic: Although the titles offered by Leapfrog from iphone 6s black Friday their own store are still limited and somewhat overpriced (with compared with the Android/iOS app stores in general), it is not a locked system anymore. This tablet runs Android and Leapfrog has made the right decision to allow their customers to sideload Android apps of their choice. In fact, Leapfrog reps are actively suggesting people to sideload apps when answering questions here on Amazon’s product page. This opens the door for this tablet to be much more useful than the previous generation model. So if you have had this fear like I did that you are buying a locked, proprietary system, with Epic, you do not have to worry about it anymore. I can easily sideload apps directly from Amazon’s Android Appstore or another Android device from which you have access to the Google Play store or even install apk files directly from the Internet (which I will not recommend doing).
I consider myself a gadget freak and I was not expecting to like this tablet as much as I did. This tablet and its ecosystem are well designed for kids. This is one of the few tablets I have seen on the market that are truly designed for kids. Many of the kids tablets in the market are the tablets that were designed for adults but later repurposed for kids with barely more than just a parental lock and a few kids’ apps. Let me explain what I mean by that. Amazon’s Fire for Kids Edition is just a Kindle Fire with the FreeTime app and the upgraded accidental warranty. There is nothing special about the tablet or its ecosystem that makes it unique for kids. Amazon did not go out and design a custom tablet OS for kids. This is what makes Leapfrog leap ahead of most other kids tablets in the market.
Let me elaborate more on what I mean by “a tablet OS designed for kids”. The home screens on most tablets (namely Android or iPads) are boring for most kids. They usually have nothing more than a background image (some animated ones) with several rows of app icons plastered across that boring background. Leapfrog Epic has an interactive home screen that was designed for kids. It shows a city street (like the Sesame Street) with interactive objects. When kids are not in an app, they can still find the tablet interesting to play with. The city changes from daytime to nighttime based on the time of the day. Not only that, the weather in the city changes to the weather in your location based on what you select as your city in the weather app. Very smart! This is really unique and I have not seen on any other tablet OS designed so intelligently for kids. [*** UPDATE 11/20/2015: I realized that the weather did not change automatically. It was just a 'weather sticker' (what is essentially an interactive item) that kids can drag on to the city to add the effect of different weather within the city.]
Let me list some of the things that I really like about this tablet, followed by what I don’t like.
What I Really Like About Leapfrog Epic:
1. Ability to easily sideload Android apps.
2. Custom Android OS designed from the ground up for kids. This is not just another Android tablet with app icons all over the screen.
3. Multiple individual profiles for kids. (Also see #1 under What I Do Not Like About Leapfrog Epic)
4. Great parental controls. Customization is more granular than I have seen in other parental controls. You can really customize it. For example, you can completely block the web browser from the younger kid’s profile while allowing the older kid to visit select few websites. You can set time limits for individual activities. For example, how many minutes/hours of web browsing, how many minutes/hours of videos, etc. Very smart!
5. There are some really great educational games and apps available through Leapfrogs app store. I ended up buying over $50 worth of educational apps and games. If I think of them as “apps”, I find them expensive but when I think of them as well-designed educational app, I could easily justify spending on education. The apps really help with math and reading skills.
What I Do Not Like About Leapfrog Epic:
1. Although there are individual profiles you can set, there is no option to set a password or PIN for each profiles. What I wanted to do was set a PIN for my older kids profile so the younger kid is not able to accidentally pick that. Currently, the tablet presents the two child profiles and allows the kid to select one of them without any further prompts.
2. Apps and games are limited and expensive. As another reviewer pointed out, a $20 gift card from Leapfrog currently discounted and selling on Amazon for under $14 can save you some money. But the apps in general are more expensive.
3. When powered off and plugged in to charge, I was expecting to see some battery charge indicator that could tell me when the device is fully charged. It shows nothing on the screen. [*** UPDATE 11/20/2015: Today I can see a battery charge indicator when the tablet was powered off. I don't know if some automatic update fixed it but previously the screen was completely black when powered off while charging.]
4. This may be an issue with the tablet I received, but at least four times, I could not power it on after leaving it to charge overnight. I kept the power button pressed while removing the bumper to make sure the button is pressed but still got nothing on the screen. So I thought that maybe it did not charge and I plugged in the USB cable and tried to power it on. Lo and behold it started loading. Once it was fully started, I could see that the battery was fully charged. I am not sure why it is happening and if others are seeing the same.
